Turns out, finding information about quests in Vanguard is a huge pain in the ass, especially when things haven’t been updated in (literally) years. Because of this, I’m going to start posting a few of my own walk-throughs as I complete quests, in the hopes that when I need to find them later they’ll actually be around. The information is out there, but it’s quite literally scattered all over the damn place, and because Vanguard has three completely different spheres that you can level up via, it’s just a disaster. Finding out where I should be in game is also proving to be quite an annoyance, so we’ll see if I can’t put together all the information I’ve stumbled upon and create some sort of leveling guide. I know absolutely nothing after level 50 either, which means I’ll have to try to find information on that some where. My highest level is 50, and that was the cap the last time I was playing seriously. Since then the cap has raised to 55.

My shaman is almost level 35. I spend the evening questing and clearing up old entries in my journal. Surprisingly enough there was only one death, despite the fact that  I haven’t played the shaman in quite some time. It’s 1am and I’m exhausted so this post is going to end here for now. Looking forward to a lot more posts tomorrow. Also, I wish I had the know-how to create a wiki for Vanguard, I’d be great at that.

Ah yes, bring on the “that game is still around?!” and “people still play that game?!” comments, today I’m talking about Vanguard. While I don’t often write about the game I have still been playing, my in-game home is still there and I’ve even had some neighbours pop up around the area. Last week Vanguard received a new launch pad, and I have to say it’s pretty nice. It mimics the new launch pads that were created for EQ2 and EQ1, and you can find them (as well as all of the SOE launch pads) over at soe.getthegame.com. It’s nice to have them all in a central location. If you’ve already got a copy of Vanguard installed on your PC be sure to point to the proper directory, as the new installation path is NOT where the old one used to install. The entire process was smooth and the game launches far more clean than it used to. I’m incredibly pleased.

The fact that there is a new launch pad (and a few other things in the works) gives me hope for this game. For too long now people have assumed that it should/will be shut down – and I have diligently stood on the side promoting it as a gem. I will continue to do so. The graphics for this game were well beyond its time, and I feel that it has finally reached a period where people have the computers to appreciate it fully. There are still glitches, but, they are being worked on.

You can still find me in-game running the guild Nomadic Gamers. It’s small (in fact at the time of posting it there are only two active members, one of them being myself) and more of a social guild than anything else. If you want to talk to me in game you can find me there as Stargrace (50 disciple), Arysh (18 warrior), Faydai (47 blood mage), or my 34 shaman and 24 bard. Their names escape me this morning, so just do a search for Nomadic Gamers. Chances are anyone on is me. This post has been quite rambling but you should expect some ‘better’ ones about Vanguard in the future. There are still so many dungeons I’ve yet to explore, so many quests I haven’t done. I’m looking forward to showing them off, and I may even post another Vanguard video or two. It’s been a while since I’ve made one.

As many of you know the Vanguard Development team has been working hard on delivering you new content to Vanguard! We are currently getting close to migrating this update over to the test server so that those interested in checking it out early, as well as, aiding in the testing and balance process can do so!

So what is in the first upcoming update….

· Overland Raid bosses

· New Dungeon – City of Brass

Massive progressive dungeon with thirteen bosses and new rewards for players that can survive long enough to obtain them

· Removal of Corpse recovery

This will aid in making the leveling process more enjoyable as well as remove the frustration that can be encountered from suffering a death penalty

· Experience curve decreased

Experience has been modified to make leveling a new character a bit easier

· Increase in loot drop rates

· “Golden Path”

Riftways instructing players to ideal leveling areas with new rewards for all levels

Thoughts? There are 8+ pages of comments from other VG players, some of them are upset with the changes, but over all I think they’re great. Now if only the game would go free to play to get some fresh blood in there.. Are these changes enough to get you into game again or is it too little too late?

Where does the time go – I started this blog back in 2006 and have been posting fairly frequently ever since. I’ve met some wonderful people and some not so wonderful people. I’ve shared my experiences with numerous games over that period and I’ve had fun writing ‘my way’ which is typically drama free (and results in less comments but is true to my nature). Back in 2006 EQ2 was my game of choice, and while my desire to play it has faded over time I always look at it with fond memories. These days I bounce between a handful of games, at the moment the list includes EQ1, Vanguard, League of Legends, World of Warcraft, Rift, and The Lord of the Rings Online, Sims 3, and whatever else happens to strike my fancy.

On the game ‘news’ front this week is pretty exciting. There were test patch notes released for 4.3 (World of Warcraft) and today 1.5 is going live in Rift which is bringing about all sorts of goodies. We’re counting down to the Sims 3 Pets release, and SW:TOR was also given a release date. I’m excited about Skyrim, which is supposed to release November 11th if all goes well. There’s a handful of other notable games releasing over the next few months that I’m sure have people pretty excited. It’s a great time to be a gamer (and a writer of said games).

I just want to thank everyone who continues to read this site, and any newcomers. While I write for myself (and always will) it’s incredibly heartwarming to know there are others out there reading about my adventures and sharing in my virtual travels. It’s double experience from Friday morning (7am PST) until Tuesday morning (same time) – and of course I’ve been in game taking advantage of it. Not only did Hampooj and I finally hit level 34 while questing in Cragwind but I got a few diplomacy levels as well. Once we picked up our new skills we set out for Seawatch Coast, which is just North of Cragwind. We started doing some Bounty Hunter quests, and while it’s not a lot of money (a handful of silver) but it was a lot of experience and I believe I’m about half way through the level now. I’ve almost burned through all of my rest experience, which is something I haven’t done in a very long time.

Pictured above – me working on the diplomacy chain, I’m speaking to the King of New Targonor and he sends me to speak with the Sultan in Aghram. I’m working an investigation for the Sultan, finding out the background and history of someone who works for him. I always love going to his home because he has 12 wives, and there are little fun facts all over the palace if you take the time to look. For example, if you click on the cat you’ll see padding around you’ll be met with a description about how it’s incredibly well taken care of and constantly brushed due to the fact that it’s looked after by 12 women who have a lot of time on their hands. You can speak to each of the wives who will give you their opinion on the fact that the Sultan has 12 wives, some are not as favorable to the idea as the others.

It may come as a bit of a surprise, but I don’t actually play games based on their populations. If I enjoy a game I enjoy a game and honestly I spend 80% of the time doing my own thing to begin with. I have other means of social interaction and I value my quiet space. This is one of the reasons that it is so easy for me to fall back into playing Vanguard on a steady basis, especially because there is just so much to do. I don’t begrudge anyone else the game they play and I would expect others to do the same. That being said – Vanguard is NOT dead. There is a very tight community there and yes, it’s quite small but it is active. No, Vanguard isn’t being worked on development wise and players have known this for quite some time now – but honestly, there is so much to do that it doesn’t bug me. When I play Vanguard I just have to keep my mind open to the possibility that the game may not be around next year. Personally, I feel that it will be here for at least 1 year more, but I don’t like to predict any further. I’m playing it because I absolutely love every aspect of it. Adventuring, Crafting, and Diplomacy give me such a sense of achievement. Even though the game has been out years now the graphics and views still sweep me away. I feel that my characters are unique, blood mages are a LOT of fun as are disciples and they’re completely different then shaman and clerics – even though all four I just listed are healers.

Always the nomadic gamer, I spent most of yesterday between EQ and VG (and logged into Rift to claim the free goodies bag while I had the chance). In Vanguard I played my 31 shaman along with a 31 Deathknight that a friend was leveling up. I run a guild there (called, you guessed it) Nomadic Gamers, and I have my personal home in game set as the guild hall. We explored Craigwind Ridge for hours, and managed to ding 32 and most of the way in when we finally turned in all of our quests. Personally I’m really looking forward to moving on to a new area, Qalia was never my favorite continent. I’m trying to get my harvesting caught up with my adventure level but as I learned yesterday two very important vanguard sites have been taking down, vgcrafters and vgtact (diplomacy site) and this left me wandering around trying to search for the zone I was supposed to be in to harvest.

When it comes to gaming, remember. You’re allowed to enjoy whatever game you want, for whatever reasons you want. If you’re not having fun from the moment you log into game until the moment you log out – then why are you playing.

If only I had the time. That statement haunts me even to the moment that I’m typing it out. I think we live in a glorious age where there are just SO many incredible games to play – and I just don’t have enough time for them all. It’s impossible. What am I up to these days? Well.

EverQuest: My main game at this moment in time, and has been since the progression servers launched. I am no longer playing on a progression server but have returned to my home of Drinal. I have a 90 necromancer and an 89 soon-to-be 90 enchanter. My second account is active (for now) and I’ve been playing a bard who just reached level 80 yesterday. I’ve been exploring House of Thule in all its glory, and working on my 1.0-1.5-2.0 epics. I haven’t explored much of the previous expansion (Underfoot) yet but I’m looking forward to that. EverQuest just has SO much content for players (12 years will do that) and I’ve been having a wonderful time. I’ve been doing crafting as well, and have made a few friends. I’ve stayed in my casual guild so far, but that may change in the future. I’ve been doing anniversary events which are around (along with Fabled spawns) until April 26th. For those who say you can never go back – I say yes you can.

EverQuest II: I’ve done little to nothing since DoV released. I’ve obtained 1 flying mount and done a few public quests for gear on both the troubador and the warden. I did do the chrono portal quests that were released as a tribute to EQ1, but aside from that EQ2 has barely been on my radar. I keep wanting to go back but I can’t find (aside from housing and crafting) what it is I’m looking for when I play. For now I’m still drifting.

Rift: I’ve got a level 21 as my max level character at the moment, along with a handful of crafting alts. I haven’t really touched the game that much, I’m still in the starter area. I have decided to sign up for a 6 month subscription because I know I will be back when time allows and the $10/m deal was just too good to pass up. When I’ll actually have the time, I just don’t know.

Vanguard: Yes, still playing. These days I’m mostly doing diplomacy quests or crafting and not that much adventuring. It’s not a bad thing, it’s a time restraint thing. If I had more time I’d play more. This is still one of my all time favorite games.

The Sims Medieval: Love it. Need more time to play it. My kingdom is doing well. I have a tavern, a market, and I created some sort of spy outpost along with NPC to run them all. I haven’t played anyone but the monarch yet, but I’m excited about switching and seeing what other personalities I can uncover.

If I had the time I’d also be brushing up on the handful of games that I’ve got collecting dust. STO comes to mind, Wizard 101, Guild Wars, Dragon Age II (which I bought and haven’t even installed yet on my PC), Free Realms (both PS3 and PC versions), LotRO (which I have been neglecting badly), Magicka, Minecraft, and Recettear. How can we NOT be amazed by the fantastic games we’ve got available to us.

What is your game of choice at the moment? I expect my game-play to also decrease significantly over the next little while. My birthday is coming up, and with it a new Kindle (replacing my sony pocket e-reader) and a new Ipad 2.0 (replacing my ipod 1st gen), I also picked up a kinect, and have been having fun with their work out programs. PLUS spring has finally started, and I expect to be out and about with my camera and a good book – well, as soon as all this rain lets up of course.

I attempt to explain the very basics of diplomacy, one of the 3 spheres of gameplay in Vanguard (the other two being of course adventuring and crafting). I do a poor job but I’m just getting over a cold and decided why not. I’ll do part II next week where I talk about the more complicated side of diplomacy.

I asked on twitter what people would like to see in a video of Vanguard, and Jeremy suggested I take a peek at Dargun’s Tomb, located in Thestra. I had actually never been to this dungeon before, and was only too happy to oblige. If there is a place you’d like me to take some video at, let me know and I will do my best!

History: “An old tomb built by the dwarves for their mighty leader Dargun Thunderaxe. It has long since perished and been plundered by gnolls and ogres who have taken up residency.

The dungeon has a great quest associated with it for an epic weapon: Dargun’s Tomb weapon quest walkthrough ; the walkthrough also has an amazing map – this place is HUGE. I would have shown more of it in the video, but alas I decided to take on a named bat not realizing that it actually silences and when you’re a bloodmage (key word there, MAGE) being silenced is death. Literally.

You need to be level 30 to start the weapon quest, and it’s best that you’re in a group of 5-6 players.
