The polar bears who were scheduled to bring me my copy of TSO were stuck in the freak snow storm we had here in Ottawa yesterday, and no retail outlets were selling TSO. In fact some didn’t even know what TSO was as they stood dumbfounded at the counter wondering if TSO was some makeshift phrase for WoTLK.
Alas, I won’t be getting my copy of EQ2’s newest expansion until later today. This may be a secret blessing in disguise though as I listened to channels last night of everyone else having fun (or not so much fun) in the expansion. The server was heavily racked with lag. Instances were up and down, and it took pretty much everyone 10+ minutes to zone anywhere. Not to fear though! There was still lots I could do even without TSO. I figure starting the content a day or two late means an extra day of interest while everyone else burns themselves out.
So what is there to do if you don’t own TSO?
Well, number one there are the new recipe books for carpenters in The Village of Shin. If you hang around the Nuwin house (I may have that name wrong) you’ll notice pages fluttering around. If you’re lucky everyone will be so caught up in the expansion and in the other pretties they won’t notice it, because let me tell you 10 crafters all hunting for 2 pages in a collection of 7 every 2-5 minutes can get quite crowded.
It’s completely worth it though as it allows you to make some very nice new furniture with the village of shin theme to it. It’s also not apart of TSO, it’s part of GU50, so you don’t need the expansion for it. I also picked up a new harvester quest in The Village of shin that requires a lot (and I do mean a lot) of harvesting. Enough harvesting to keep anyone happy for hours on end. There is ONE down side to this quest!
EVERYONE and their dog is out there harvesting, making low level zones crowded. I took a peak into Oakmyst forest and people seemed to have suddenly forgotten that there are other zones that also supply these harvests. Try TD or Greater Faydark or Darklight Woods if your server has suddenly become populated with people who are harvesting. The zones are far larger and the nodes friendlier. They may even take you out for dinner first.
If that’s not enough to keep you busy while you frantically wait for EBGames to call you about a preorder, then take a look at your character select screen. If it looks anything like mine it will say the following:
Your characters are receiving 30% adventure bonus for having 3 max level characters. Your characters are receiving 50% crafting bonus for having 5 max level characters.
That’s right! Lets SPEED UP the process of leveling for those who have done it time and time again (so we get bored FASTER!). I had really hoped that new character slots would come along with this expansion, alas it appears that I’ll be keeping my second account open a little bit longer if I want to give in to those alt cravings. Because RoK quest grinding is a complete turn off to my play style, I took my 51 bruiser and my 73 defiler and headed off to Steamfont Mountains to mentor a 37 ranger (Shadowgeist doesn’t have his copy of TSO either, it was alt night needless to say). I also claimed my 5 year veteran reward. I never understood why
We recieve so many experience boosting potions for having our accounts longer then anyone else. By the time five years rolls around you don’t need those things any more. My bank is absolutely filled with potions that I will never use.
Oh, and if you happen to have gotten TSO last night (lucky) you will notice that this expansion does NOT add the free 90 days like every other expansion that has been released. This was addressed in the forums, so if you see other people also wondering where their free days are, they’ll have to keep playing. I’m not sure why they changed them this expansion, but there you have it.
In the end, I still had a fun night playing. Ardwulf was on (also combating the long zone times) and Kasul was on after a larger download, so I didn’t have anyone in guild talking about how awesome TSO was. Hopefully tonight I’ll be able to round up Tipa and Kasul and we can head to some crafting instances. I did manage to peek at the new merchants, and that Unicorn for 10 tokens is calling my name.

The Shadow Odyssey November / 18 / 2008
The Shadow Odyssey is now live!
You can visit EQ2Players.com to read news and articles about the latest EverQuest II expansion or you can dive right into game and visit the new airship near the Sinking Sands docks to visit the newly discovered Moors of Ykesha.
An all new map system has been added for all players.
GAMEPLAY
- You can now mitigate critical attacks done to you. Critical attacks work as before but the player can mitigate the amount done to them by having higher agility for melee classes or higher intelligence for priests and mages. In addition, you will now find certain creatures can critical against you. They will use their calculated damage times their critical multiplier to determine their damage. PvP based combat will now also follow this formula. Players against an npc will continue taking the higher of max damage plus one or damage times critical multiplier. There are also some items which now reduce the amount of critical damage you take while in combat.
- As a result of the critical mitigation addition, damage formulas have changed slightly. Damage is now calculated the following way:
base damage calculation
weapon attacks add in dps and weapon multipliers
spell and weapon tier multipliers
attribute modifiers
base damage multipliers
normalized damage ( +spell/ca/heal amounts )
critical multiplier
- All of your characters will now receive a 10% experience bonus for each character at the maximum level. (Up to 50% max). - Pet buff icons will now tint when out of range. Examine data will now also list the range of the spell.
- Combat arts will now properly use the max damage + 1 as the minimum critical amount when attacking an npc. PvP combat arts will still use damage time the critical multiplier.
- Fish and water-only creatures should now stay underwater.
- Item purchases that require items other than gold in exchange now have a confirmation dialog.
- Characters will now continue to get Apprentice I versions of spells and combat arts placed in their spell book at appropriate levels above 50.
- /load_uisettings will no longer work while the crafting window is open.
- Glide/Slow fall can now be suspended by holding the jump key while falling.

ITEMS
- Ayonic Axe, Lamentation of the Intrepid, Marrow’s Song, and Incandescent Blade have all been changed to a 4.0 delay.

How did you spend your last day before the TSO expansion releases? Mine was not exactly all that eventful, but I still had a lot of fun. I spent most of the day hanging out in Albrta and Eyenstein’s alt guild hall, taking advantage of their harvest hirelings. I mentioned yesterday that Shadowgeist and I helped them purchase their hall, I also have a few of my alts in their guild. I had a lot of fun watching their characters running around beginning the decorating process. Like any hall, it will take time of course. I sent the hirelings out after T6 supplies since I have two crafters currently stuck on that tier. With the game down for 12 hours today, I doubt I’ll get any harvesting done. The joys of having two accounts though, I can leave one in the hall to unload the hirelings and send them back out every two hours while the other character does the ‘fun’ stuff (if I get my copy of the game today that is, there’s no guarantee on that yet).
After sending the harvesters out for the fifth time, I decided to head out and do a little adventuring with my illusionist (78) and Defiler (73) duo. I was just finishing up the Kylong Plains quests on the defiler, and figured I may as well get them completely finished. With the new expansion coming out today I’m sure the zones will be empty when I go back the next time.
I had only one chain of quests left that sent me to tag some mobs, and of course along the way someone in 70-79 asks what level and how much Bathezid watch faction is needed in order to do the crafting epic. The channel was spammed by people giving the wrong answer, and I had to jump right in. It’s -20,000 for those who were curious, and level 80 crafter. While I was doing this, my defiler was being eaten by a giant and since I was boxing and not exactly paying attention, she was smushed.
I had forgotten to give out rez items (lets face it I didn’t exactly expect to die) but my illusionist happens to be a mighty fine tinkerer who carries a supply of the home made brand on her. They don’t always work, but when they do it’s great. Tonight was one of those nights. I rez’d the healer, buffed up and headed back out.
The experience in RoK questing is just as shoddy as I remember it being the last four times I did it. The defiler went from 13% to 38% after a handful of quests, and the mentored illusionist barely got 1% total because killing mobs and not doing quests (she’s already done them) rewards pretty much nothing. I’d get a lot better experience mentoring my 51 monk and killing heroic mobs for an hour. In fact that’s how I’ll probably do it next time.
Ardwulf stopped in with his bruiser for a little while, and achieved his first aa’s, which was great. Kasul was also around and knee deep in a CoA run. Apparently they had good luck, but I didn’t see him loot any Cardiocutter, so it couldn’t have been *that* great of a run. Better luck next time! Nostalgia also has three new members, a father and his two sons who we’re excited to have along. We’re growing, even if it is slow we have a fantastic core group of players.
By the time I headed off to Fens of Nathsar (I had forgotten to pick up the sokokar post earlier, long walk!) I was starting to fall asleep at the desk, and so I called it a night. Gated back home, sold the few bits of goodies I had on me, sent the harvest npc’s out once more into the wild, and went to bed.
Today the game is down for 12 hours. Which means you can expect a number of things on this site throughout the day. One would be the patch notes for GU50 if they’re posted some where eventually. Remember that’s separate from the TSO expansion going live. It includes things such as players receiving their app1’s from 1-80 (so you finally know what you get now!) and special carpenter only recipes that come from shiny in Mara. I’m sure I’ll be spamming the site with useless posts about nothing, so stay tuned for that! Servers are due back up at 3pm EST, we’ll see if that holds true.
See you all in Norrath (later)!

I logged in yesterday thinking that it would be close to the time where I should be getting new Legends of Norrath cards on both of my accounts, and what do you know, there they were. My main account has had horrible luck with LoN, I rarely get any loot items and this time was no exception. Nor was the time before this one. The 2nd account I have has far better luck. It must be because of the halflings on the account or something. In any case, when I opened up the 5 booster packs everyone gets, I received the free 5-room housing (good for any Qeynos or Freeport home). That’s right, this house is rent free. There are no ‘free’ 5-room homes in Qeynos or Freeport, they all require status and rent. I’m glad I’ve got one, since I don’t currently own a 5-room Freeport home, that’s what it will be going towards.
Shadowgeist and myself also helped out our good friends in Crimson Blades purchase their first guild hall, congratulations on that! I’m sure I will be stopping by to make use of their harvest hirelings, those things are amazing. Nostalgia will hopefully be able to purchase a few once we get more levels.
The expansion comes out tomorrow, so of course in preparation for it today I made a new character. Oh, wait. The new expansion actually doesn’t have anything that caters to new players. I decided to make a berserk er though just to see how they played.
I did get a chance to do the LoN scenario that rewards you with glowing red eyes as well before it’s taken away from the line up, pretty interesting item. There’s a lot of LoN scenario rewards that come in handy, experience potions and the like. While I’m not keen on spending a lot of money to buy cards, I do enjoy playing the game.
Hopefully the expansion goes off tomorrow without too much trouble. I’m looking forward to riding my dire bear mount around Norrath! See you there.

Today was a day for alts. I decided I would try to level up my 24 paladin a little bit. Now, I’ve mentioned this quite a few times in the past. Anyone who knows me realizes I have never really played a tank class before. Boxed someone else’ tank? Sure. I’ve never actually had one of my own though. With Tipa and Kasul and a few other fairly frequent Nostalgia members, none of them tanks, I decided it was time I played one. Lithe is my Kerran, and so far she’s a lot of fun to play. Oracia (coercer), Yashiro (ranger), and myself playing Lithe (paladin) and Arysh (warden mentored) headed to fallen gate to lay waste to the undead that wander the zone. We all got a few levels before I called it quits so I could watch the Santa Claus parade on tv and work on NaNoWriMo (which hit 30,066 words today. Home stretch here I come!) as well as take care of some dinner.
The paladin is not that different for me since I’ve played tanks before and just never owned one. It’s a lot of fun, and I do have to pay attention to gear more so that I’m able to withstand the hits. It’s great to be able to box and have a healer or extra dps along. Have I mentioned how much I enjoy Synergy? I think maybe once or twice.
I also have a baby warlock I’m going to level up a little bit. I’ve never played a warlock or a wizard before. I’d like to get the warlock to level 25 so that she can use the wizard ports. I realize we have the druid rings within the guild hall (and oh do I love them) but wizard ports don’t require any access to use. There are individual ports and group ports. The downside is that they only port to a few locations. Ah well. It’s better then none!
I hope everyone else had an amazing weekend, the EQ2 expansion comes out on Tuesday and while I’m not especially excited about the adventure side of the expansion, I am excited about the changes in GU50, and the crafter changes. We’ll see how it goes.

This morning, half awake, I decided to betray my monk to a bruiser. Nothing new there, I’ve been betraying classes back and forth since as long as I (or anyone else for that matter) can remember. It’s one method for me to keep the game fresh. I gave it some thought and then decided not only would I betray my monk, but I would also re-activate my second account (I really do like having the ability to make alts and box in EQ2) and, I would take my 45 brigand and betray them to a swashbuckler at the same time (boxing via the laptop and synergy) as betraying my monk.
It worked out pretty well, though I’m not quite done working on the faction I need for the monk. They both met up in Haven where one tried to convince the other that where they were headed was a path of wrongness and other variables, but ultimately betrayal won out for both of them.
Aside from that, I also got to welcome Ardwulf to Nostalgia! Surprised me, I was almost (almost!) tempted to re-activate my Vanguard account after reading his post but decided to go with the EQ2 boxing rout instead. After some careful consideration I decided I actually miss settling down in one game. I enjoy playing a large amount but it never really let me ‘finish’ anything. With a new EQ2 expansion coming out on Tuesday, I want to say ‘yes, I play EQ2 as my main game of choice’ rather then ‘well I play EQ2 and EQ1 and WoW and Wizard 101 and and and and’ listing game after game. Once the novelty of the new expansion wears off no doubt I’ll go back to game hoping.
So far it’s been a great weekend. I managed to get my paladin a few levels (24!) and some new weapons (thank you Shadowgeist) as well as getting my brigand swashbuckler some new weapons. For some reason when I attempt to /claim my 5 year reward I’m met with an error (that’s not restricted to me either might I add, everyone is getting it) and hopefully it’s fixed before too long. As far as I’m aware it’s meant to go live on Tuesday along with GU50 and the expansion. Guess we’ll see!
Tomorrow I’d like to get a few craft levels, finish betraying the monk, and we’ll see what else from there.
NaNoWriMo is going well, after my huge flop of only 500 words yesterday I sat down and added another 2,000 on top of that this morning at 6am and will do another 2,000 once this post is wrapped up for the day. That will put me at around 28,000 and on track to finish around the 26th. The experience has been interesting for me. I’m not sure if it’s been a good one or a bad one yet. I’ve never written this much before, ever. My longest stories have only ever been a few pages. I’ve hit page 41 with my NaNoWriMo story. I can’t even say whether or not I enjoy it. I don’t think I really do, but it has opened up doors for other stories I wouldn’t mind writing, or at least other types of stories. Guess that’s enough procrastinating here!
I hope everyone is having an amazing weekend!

What happens when you add a bunch of alcohol, pie, dancing halflings, 52 players, and one very fine looking community manager to three rooms together? Pillow fights of course!
Last night at 5pm PST one of the (many) birthday bashes took place on Najena. Each server will be having their own party so be sure to check here to see when your server is having theirs. I thing events like these are really important to communities, and it’s not just because we all got some cool prizes to take home. The rooms were decorated wonderfully and there were people (quite literally) everywhere.

We were even granted a special treat when the famous bard herself, Tipa, stepped up to the piano along with some background singers and sang her rendition of screaming cats happy birthday to Norrath. What a delightful experience!
There were items people could click throughout the room ranging from drinks, to throw pillows, to throw pies. A wishing well sat in the center of the main pool where people could harvest goodies. A word of caution though, you do need to have a fishing skill in order to harvest from this pool.
Grimwell played out his part well, especially for someone who has to do parties all week on multiple servers. He interacted with the players and switched forms every few minutes, keeping things interesting. Gee, I wonder which illusion the players liked the most?

Everyone gathered together at the end for a photo opportunity. I spent most of the evening wandering around taking screenshots (just over 50 of them) to remember the occasion by. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and I’m glad Nostalgia had fun too.
I wanted to hang out a little more, but once Grimwell left I was reminded that I still had 1,000 words to write for NaNoWriMo (22,635 words total now) and then by the time that was done I had time to watch a little tv and then it was bed.
Less then a week to go until the new EQ2 expansion releases, happy birthday!

Continuing along the Wizard city quests yesterday, I was pretty amazed at how big the world feels. I’ve never been particularly good at remembering where areas are, and I found myself getting lost often, or getting sent to areas I’d never even heard of before. I have one quest that sends me out to located these little tiny men scattered all over Wizard City. I’m stuck on the one in the shopping district. Or maybe it’s Triton, I can’t remember right now. As my life / storm combination progresses, I’ve learned a few things. Number one, I really need to make a deck for playing with friends. I’m not sure if there’s any way to do that or if I should just switch out some cards. My typical deck is perfect when it’s just me. It includes only a few heals, and a lot of attacks. I haven’t had any issue with it now that I hit level 10, things have been going pretty well. Until I group up with a bunch of friends and I’m left searching my deck frantically for a heal to toss out on them.
Wizard 101 is so very different then every other game I’ve played (for a number of reasons that I’ve hid on here and there) that it’s actually made me change how I think about games in general. Their completely open grouping concept (which is not really grouping at all so much as jumping into battles with up to three other people) means that if you’re looking to get those harder encounters done you will either want to have friends online to play with, or be quite social. It’s very common for people to spam group invites, and for the most part I decline them. I accept of course if they are someone I already know - or if I happen to be doing a battle and they seem to know what they’re doing which was the case yesterday. After I cast a group heal on everyone (it was needed) one of the players expressed their thanks and we finished off the encounter fairly easily. I don’t enjoy being spammed with friend invites just like I don’t enjoy being spammed with group invites in any other game, but I’m more talkative in this game, and when I’m in the zones I know people have paid to gain access to, I’m a little less cautious about who I make my friend because I know they at least have enough of a grasp on the game (or their parents do, either way) to have invested some coin in it.
Aside from changing my tactics on interacting with other players, I love the way this game makes me think about my next move. When I’m not thinking about my next move I’m thinking about the moves after that. Can I survive a round or two of trying to gain pips so I can pull out some uber card next? Do I let the giant cyclops whump me because I neglected to fill up on health and mana ahead of time? Exactly how long can I play the mini games before I need to blink (there’s one I’m completely addicted to in particular).
Another amusing point to me is the fact that on more and more blogs these days I’m not reading about WAR, or EQ2 or any other popular mainstream MMO - I’m reading about Wizard 101. Now, that has a large amount to do with my choice in reading, I know. I subscribe to quite a few blogs via google reader and then tend to snoop the comments on the more popular blogs (you all know who you are) and read the blogs of those who have left comments.
On a completely unrelated note - TODAY is the EQ2 anniversary party on Najena at 8pm EST (That’s 5pm PST). Tipa, consider this your official reminder! I’d like to see as many Nostalgians show up as possible (yes, all five of us) though I completely understand if people have other things to do. I’ll be there as (of course) Stargrace, hopefully I can get a few good screen shots in to write about tomorrow.
No worries about me missing out on any ‘other’ game time. That’s what the laptop is for.

I decided to subscribe to Wizard 101 for a month, and see if I wanted to continue to play it after the month was up. So far I’ve been playing pretty frequently, I really wish Xfire recognized it. As it is now, I set my status on Xfire by hand and load it up on the laptop so I can still talk to people while I’m in full screen. I reached level 8 in W101 by doing the wizard city quests (the ones I had available at least) and a handful of the Halloween events. I’ve got a slightly better grasp on things now, watching where other people are attacking so that I can either help them or move on to the next encounter if their hit is going to kill it. My little Angela is a life / storm wizard, so while I don’t have an amazing amount of damage dealing cards, I do have a few. I’ve had a few good and not so good experiences wandering around wizard city and finding others to play with. One not so good was a Halloween tower, one of the more simple ones. I think it was Malfi I was with. Two of the other people decided to just sit in on the card playing rounds and do no moves at all. We would have beaten it if it were not for that.
I bought myself a dragon companion, and have been playing in Fire Cat Ally for most of the morning. The game is simple enough that I can do other things while playing (or sit and watch the cool spell effects and listen to the little imps I have cackle gleefully as I vanquish another foe) and the only thing I find more addicting then W101 itself, is the mini games you use to replenish your health and mana.
I haven’t really been in the mood to play EQ2 lately, I just don’t have the time to sit for 2-3 hours in a row working on something in particular. I have been playing WoW for short bursts (an hour here and there) in between trying to keep NaNo going. I’m up to 18,565 words now and the story seems to be slugging through this section, or maybe it’s just my moods. I’m just barely on track with being able to finish on the 26th if I keep up with my 2k words every day. Since the 30th is our last day I’ve been trying to give myself a little more leeway, but it hasn’t quite been working out.
For the first time ever, I am not excited about EQ2’s next expansion. I can’t exactly say why. I’m just not feeling it. I played in the beta and I didn’t feel it then either. Instead of saying ‘wow this is amazing’ I spent my time saying ‘Wow this is it? Why is it so empty?’ The one overland zone was a lot of empty space and then groups of mobs spread throughout and very little ’stuff’ to me personally. Of course every one will come up with their own personal views on it. I have pre-ordered the retail version (I wanted the bear) and I’m sure the crafting bits will entice me, but we’ll have to see about the rest.

I was working on an interview for the upcoming issue of Beckett Massive Online Gamer - but due to the fact that there are so many expansions all releasing at around the same time, there wasn’t any room for the article (No worries, there are still two articles for EQ2 in the issue). Not wanting to waste the interview nor the time spent with the designers, BeckettMOG posted it online for readers.

Enjoy!
